Wednesday Walk – 12 June, 2024

As usual meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for a two hour walk followed by coffee at a city centre cafe.

The weather forecast is for a low chance of light rain showers. The walk will follow as close as possible the route of the dismantled Crab and Winkle Line as far as Tyler Hill. Crossing the Hackington Road we will follow a path alongside Great Hall Wood before turning right across a field and then crossing the Sarre Penn at Alcroft Grange. We will return to the city centre via Hales Place.

SSS341 – Tuesday, 11 June, 2024 – The Valley Lark Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am outside the hospital – junction of South Canterbury Road with Ethelbert Road

The Langton Path to the end of the school playing fields, rugby club, over the A2 bridge and down to Merton Farm.  Footpath through Merton Farm, later Iffin Lane and connecting to footpath to New House Lane and then down into Larkey Valley Wood.  Through the wood, coming out on Cockering Road, which we walk along until we get to the footpath for New House Lane, then along Hollow Lane turning into the orchard, later over the bridge along Stuppington Lane to the junction with South Canterbury Road, where the walk finishes.

Thursday, 6 June, 2024 The Fright Wood Circle

Meet outside the Canterbury Launderette, Nunnery Fields – opposite St Mary Bredin Church at 8:30

Lansdown Road to Toddler’s Cove, then SVW to Tonford Manor following path below side of A2 towards Podhurst Farm where we make for Denstead Farm, crossing Denstead Lane arriving at the yellow road above Primrose Hill.  We cut through Denstead Wood (no official footpath) to the Bower Wood/Nickle Wood path then the path through Fright Wood, working down to the path which crosses Ashford Road (A28) and proceeds through a gate in the wall, which leads to the bridge over the Weir. Then onto Chartham, through the Church and taking the path near the Artichoke pub, which eventually leads to Strangers Lane, then New House Lane into Hollow Lane, later crossing to Wincheap Farm, Lime Kiln Road, Zealand Road finishing at the top of Nunnery Road.

Bring lunch/elevenses/snack.  About 11 miles.

Wednesday Walk – 5 June, 2024

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for the two hour midweek walk followed by coffee.

 
Sunny intervals and gentle breeze is the weather forecast for Wednesday.
The message from Steve is coffee will be taken at the Gulbenkian, his shout!
The walk will follow the North Downs Way and at Harbledown cross the field at Hall Place arriving in Rough Common.
From there we will follow paths onto the university campus stopping for coffee before returning to the city centre.

SSS340 – Tuesday, 4 June, 2024 – The Woolton Farm Walk

Meet outside 25 St. Augustine’s Road at 8:00 am

Proceed upto Little Barton House, then across the orchards later crossing Bekesbourne Lane to the rear of Hoath Farm onto a footpath, through the young orchard, down a dip, up to tree line and bear right along edge of wood. At path T junction, next to gate into field, turn left and follow path up to Littlebourne road. Just before Littlebourne Road turn right and follow path into wood then onto rutted track then asphalt. Turn right onto asphalt farm track and follow to Woolton Farm. Through farm and follow track uphill to re-join Bekesbourne Lane. Turn right onto BL and after a third of a mile, past the old people’s home, left onto track to railway bridge.  Just before bridge turn right onto footpath down into wood, through wood and out onto edge of field. Bear right and follow track back to Little Barton House then down Spring Lane where the walk finishes.  6 miles.

Thursday 30 May 2024 – Herne via Stodmarsh

Meet 8.30am at St Martins Church

The walk is about 12 miles, with regular buses back from Herne. There is the option of a shorter walk (about 9 miles) by getting the bus back from Upstreet. Bring a packed lunch.

We take the footpath through Old Park and join with the cycle route to Fordwich. Then the Stour Valley Way from Fordwich to Stodmarsh, and the path through the Stodmarsh bird reserve to Grove Ferry. Footpath to Upstreet, then cross the main road and take the footpath to Chitty. From Chitty we take small roads through Chislet and Millbank to Herne.

Wednesday Walk – 29 May, 2024

Meet as usual at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for a two hour walk followed by coffee at a city centre cafe.

The walk will take us to Rough Common and through the woods joining the road by the Sarre Penn. We will follow a path that brings us to the church at Blean. The walk will cross the field where there is a proposal to build 2,000 new homes. The walk will continue along a short section of the old railway track crossing the university and returning to the city centre.

The weather forecast for Wednesday is for light rain showers and a moderate breeze.

SSS 339 – Tuesday 28 May, 2024 – Travelling Riverside Blues Walk

Meet at the top of Nunnery Road where it meets Nunnery Fields at 8:00am 

Nunnery Road down to Martyr’s Field, past Wincheap School, cross A28 and through Riverside Retail Park, bridge across the Stour to SVW and onward to Westgate Gardens.  We re-connect with the river by the Miller’s Arms, Sainsburys, under the bridge, up to Vauxhall Lakes then turning eastwards, crossing the A28 and heading to the SVW (and cycle path) but now heading south-westwards in the direction of St. Martin’s Church.  We turn right when we arrive at the A257 (Littlebourne Road), heading towards the Abbey then left towards Old Dover Road, where the walk finishes at the Cross Keys crossroads.
