Wednesday Walk – 30 October, 2024

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for the weekly two hour walk followed by coffee at a city central cafe.

 
The weather forecast is for mist and light winds.
The direction of the walk will be decided on the day.

SSS361 – Tuesday, 29 October,2024 – The Hospital Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am outside the hospital – junction of South Canterbury Road with Ethelbert Road
The Langton Path to the end of the school playing fields, rugby club, Nackington then down to the bottom of the fields, by the pylons, then right and left through the firebreak in the woods, up the hill and onto to the Renville path. At Renville take the bridge across the motorway and then carefully walk across the NDR/A2 approach road and onto the lane which connects to the orchards, thence onto Pilgrims’ Way/St Augustine’s Road where the walk concludes. 6 miles

Thursday 24 October, 2024 The Victory Wood Circle in Reverse (A Sean & Barry walk)

Please bring a packed lunch (to be eaten at a convenient stopping place en route)

Meet outside St Augustine’s Abbey (English Heritage) at 8.30am

Proceed towards St. Stephen’s on back roads and paths, then the University, then the Crab and Winkle route – towards Clowes Wood.  We take the footpath down to A290, arriving nearby Red Lion House then walk along the Whitstable Road to Pean Hill, where we turn into Ellenden Wood, making our way to Victory Wood, eventually ending up in Courtenay Road.  The route then goes through North Bishopden Wood, then Church Wood and, via footpaths, back to Canterbury Bus Station where the walk finishes.

Approx. 12 miles.

Wednesday Walk – 23 October, 2024

As usual gather at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for our midweek ramble.

The weather forecast for the walk is for sunny intervals and a gentle breeze.

We’ll do the walk that we meant to do last week but didn’t because of a late change of mind.

We’ll walk to the university and pick up the path next to the dismantled railway. From Tyler Hill we’ll walk to the edge of Little Hall Wood and cut across the fields crossing the Sarre Penn and climbing up to Alcroft Grange returning to the city via Hales Place and St Stephens.

SSS360 – Tuesday 22 October, 2024 – The Get Thee to a Nunnery Walk

Meet corner of Nunnery Fields/Nunnery Road @ 8am

Nunnery Road/Zealand Road/Lime Kiln Road/Fields to Hollow Lane/Footpath to New House Lane/Connecting footpath to Iffin Lane/Footpath to Bridge Road/Footpath to Lower Hardes Church then along the lane for the path through Whitehill Wood back via Bridge Road and Nackington, via Rugby Club, to the Hospital. (6 miles).

Thursday, 17 October, 2024 The Pet Circle

Meet at junction of Nunnery Road with Nunnery Fields at 8:30am

We make our way to New House Lane by the usual route, eventually crossing Chartham Downs Road to Kenfield Road into Petham CP and Capel Wood. We work our way towards Stone Street, crossing Waltham Road and Duckpit Road, then across to Hogg Lane, Bow Hill (using more yellow roads today to avoid the mud), Catt’s Wood Road and, at Well Wood, taking the footpath towards the yellow road, which is Tapleys Hill, arriving at Pett Bottom. The usual route back from here, via Whitehill Wood, Nackington, the Rugby Club, the Langton and back to Stuppington Lane. Approx: 13 miles.

Wednesday Walk – 16 October, 2024

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for a two hour walk followed by coffee.

The weather forecast for the walk is for thundery showers and a moderate breeze. Because of the forecast and possible ground conditions a decision on the direction of the walk will be decided on the day.

The photo taken on the walk last week is of the lads standing next to the brutal prison style fencing now encircling the fishing ponds just past Tonford on the river path.

SSS359 – Tuesday 15 October, 2024 – The Don’s Walk

Meet 8.00 am at St. Martin’s Church

Stour Valley Way to Fordwich (forking right – off bike route) scary bit after Fordwich for 200 yds then turn right up hill to Stodmarsh Road via CCCU playing field. Across Stodmarsh Rd, footpath straight on then veer right into field and down to Lampen Stream. Turn right along bottom of field following stream for 400 yards, then turn left across stream and up the hill to old waste dump, right onto Swanton Lane, then straight across and down past Firdown Wood. Before the bare field at near Palmstead wood turn right and proceed towards the Hoath Farm (the last bit is along Bekesborne Road, thus exercise care), then right and left and thus to Hoath Farm, home via Little Barton House. 6 miles.
