Thursday, 3 August, 2023 – Lyminge to Canterbury

Meet at Canterbury Bus Station to catch the 8:30 bus (17 from Bay D1) to Lyminge (bus arrives in Lyminge at 9:09).  During August we can get free travel at any time with our bus passes.

From Lyminge we walk back to Canterbury via Stelling Minnis and Lynsore Bottom on a mixture of yellow roads and footpaths.  Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink en route.

Wednesday Walk 2 August, 2023

Gather at the main gates to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for a two hour walk followed by coffee at a city centre cafe.

The weather forecast is for thundery showers, hopefully too infrequent to spoil the walk.

The walk last week took the lads through Stock Wood where this pic was taken.

SSS 297 – Tuesday 1 August, 2023 – Reverse Toddler’s Coves Walk

Meet at the top of Nunnery Road where it meets Nunnery Fields at 8:00am 

Nunnery Road, Zealand Road, then Lime Kiln Road to footpath, which connects to path behind Wincheap and then to Hollow Lane.  Walk along footpath by side of Hollow Lane (under A2 bridge) and along New House Lane, later take footpath across to Strangers Lane.  Walk down to A28 and cross for footpath, which leads to bridge over the Stour onto the SVW by the turning to Tonford Manor but turn right and walk to Toddler’s Cove, then across the footbridge and under the ring road towards Lansdown Road where the walk finishes. About 6 miles.

Thursday 27 July 2023 – Sandwich (northern route)

Meet 8.30am at St Martin’s Church.

The walk is about 14 miles, with a bus back from Sandwich. Bring a packed lunch.

We will take the Stour Valley walk (SVW) to and through Fordwich, branching off right to go through Trenleypark wood and past the solar farm into Littlebourne. Then take the path past the church to Wickhambreaux and between the lakes to Deadmill Bridge, Preston Court (possible break at the church) and Preston. We then take the path through Little Santon Farm and join the SVW again, through Westmarsh and Paramour Street to the Roman Amphitheatre at Richborough. Follow the Saxon Shore Way into Sandwich.

Wednesday Walk 26 July, 2023

Gather at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for a two hour walk rounded off with coffee at a city centre cafe.

 
Rain is forecast for the afternoon but should not be a problem in the morning.
Last week we ventured through the undergrowth on Barton Down onwards to Sturry Road Community Park and returning to the city for a hot beverage at Garage Coffee.
A change of direction for the next walk will take us through Homestall and Stock Woods, unless someone has a better idea.

SSS 296 – Tuesday 25 July, 2023 – Reverse The Hospital Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am outside the hospital – junction of South Canterbury Road with Ethelbert Road

The Langton Path to the end of the school playing fields, rugby club, Nackington then down to the bottom of the fields, by the pylons, then right and left through the firebreak in the woods, up the hill and onto to the Renville path. At Renville take the bridge across the motorway and then carefully walk across the NDR/A2 approach road and onto the lane which connects to the orchards, thence onto Pilgrims’ Way/St Augustine’s Road where the walk concludes. 6 miles

Thursday 20 July, 2023 The Wickhambreaux Circle

Meet outside St. Martin’s Church @ 8:30am

PLEASE BRING A PACKED LUNCH

Canterbury to Fordwich to Stodmarsh to Grove Ferry (through the Nature Reserve) then on to the Wickhambreaux Valley and slowly down to Wichambreaux. Lunch somewhere near Wickhambreaux, thence a short trek to Littlebourne and through the woods towards Swanton Lane but cutting down, crossing the A257, towards Court Wood, Jacob’s Close, Firdown Wood, The Hoath Farm and then taking the footpath towards Little Barton, Spring Lane and back into Canterbury. For a shorter walk one could drop off at Littlebourne and catch the bus back to Canterbury.

About 15 miles

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for the midweek walk.

It’s most likely we will circle Barton Down this week but walks are subject to change on the day.

SSS295 – Tuesday, 18 July, 2023 – Reverse The Get Thee to a Nunnery Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am outside the hospital – junction of South Canterbury Road with Ethelbert Road

Walk to Rugby Club then, via Nackington to Bridge Road and into Whitehill Wood.  Onward to Lower Hardes Church then take the footpath to Bridge Road junction at Stone Street; cross onto footpath, which leads to Iffin Lane, and then the connecting footpath to New House Lane, then Hollow Lane crossing onto footpath through orchards and later connecting to Lime Kiln Road and Nunnery Road where the walk ends.

Thursday 13 July 2023 – Seaside walk from Herne Bay to Margate

Meet 8.30am, Canterbury Bus Station.

We will catch the 8.35 Triangle bus to Herne Bay from Bay C4. The bus fare will be £2 to Margate, and free with a bus pass on return.

The walk is about 12 miles along the coast from Herne Bay to Margate, via Reculver, Birchington and Westgate-on-sea. There are frequent buses back from Margate.

Picnic lunch in Margate, or one of the many cafes/pubs.
