Wednesday Walk – 9 July, 2025

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am.

There is not a planned route. Steve in consultation with other regular midweek walkers will decide on the day.

The weather forecast is “sunny and gentle breeze” with temperatures of around 22 degrees.

SSS397 – Tuesday, 8 July, 2025 – Reverse Nick’s Walk

Meet outside the Launderette (opposite St. Mary Bredin Church) @ 8:00am

Toddler’s cove via Lansdown Road

Cross Toddler’s Cove, walk under the ring road bridge and then over the railway bridge, across to St. Dunstan’s Terrace, over London Road ending up on the footpath towards Rough Common.  When we are near the Blean water tower we turn left and walk down towards the Harbledown Bridge – crossing into Harbledown and walking through the grounds of St Nicholas’s Hospital.  We then take the footpath under the A2 bridge and work our way down to the Chartham Cycle path, by the Thannington footbridge over the Stour, turn left and back to Toddler’s Cover then under the ring road, towards the East Station and Lansdown Road where the walk concludes. 6 miles

Wednesday Walk – 2 July, 2025

Meet at The Wednesday Walkers gathering place at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am.

The walk will take us to Rough Common.From there we’ll make our way through open land and woodland and crossing the A290 near

Luckett Farm. The walk will follow the banks of the Sarre Penn passing Brotherhood Wood before reaching the

dismantled Railway. The track will continue to the university campus. As it will be the first Wednesday of the month the tradition of

coffee at the Gulbenkian cafe may take place. At this point we’ll return to the city centre via the cycle track and St Stephens.

Warning to shorts wearers, there may be overgrown paths to negotiate! Bring water as the weather remains hot.

SSS396 – Tuesday 1 July, 2025 – The Les Walk (The Hole in the Polo)

Meet at 8:00 am by the St. Augustine’s Triangle (start of the Footpath to the north of St. Augustine’s Road, which goes behind the houses with the UCA buildings on the other side).

The walk proceeds along the footpath, up Babbs Hill, by the side of the Barracks Estate leading to Old Park Farm open land.  It continues through the golf course (Scotland Hills), crossing Stodmarsh Road the Polo Farm, across the A257 by Fishpoolhill Wood then across to the path by Palmstead Wood and then Bekesbourne Lane.  We walk along the road to the footpath by the side of Haystack Wood, then down to Hode Farm where we turn onto the NDW through Barton Business Park and onto number 67 St. Augustine’s Road, home of the creator of this fine walk.

Thursday, 26 June, 2025 The Pet Circle

Meet at junction of Nunnery Road with Nunnery Fields at 8:30am

We make our way to New House Lane by the usual route, eventually crossing Chartham Downs Road to Kenfield Road into Petham CP and Capel Wood. We work our way towards Stone Street, crossing Waltham Road and Duckpit Road, then across to Hogg Lane, Bow Hill (using more yellow roads today to avoid the mud), Catt’s Wood Road and, at Well Wood, taking the footpath towards the yellow road, which is Tapleys Hill, arriving at Pett Bottom. The usual route back from here, via Whitehill Wood, Nackington, the Rugby Club, the Langton and back to Stuppington Lane. Approx: 13 miles.

Wednesday Walk – 25 June, 2025

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for this weeks two hour walk followed by coffee at a city centre cafe.

A decision on the direction of the walk will be decided at the time. If the hot weather continues we may wish only for a gentle stroll.

SSS395 – Tuesday, 24 June, 2025 – The Steve’s Walk

Meet corner of Nunnery Fields/Nunnery Road @ 8am

Nunnery Road/Zealand Road/Lime Kiln Road/Fields to Hollow Lane/Footpath to New House Lane and then we take the footpath leading to Chartham Downs but turn off towards St. Augustine’s when we arrive at the wood.  After walking through the wood we cross the recreation ground turning right on the return path leading to Larkey Valley, later joining Cockering Road and proceed onwards to the A2/retail park junction, crossing the various turn-offs to the A2 and finding the footpath to Wincheap School, later Oxford Road/Norman Road where the walk ends.

Thursday 19 June, 2025 The Victory Wood Circle (A Sean & Barry walk)

Please bring a packed lunch (to be eaten at a convenient stopping place en route)

Meet outside St Augustine’s Abbey (English Heritage) at 8.30am – this week’s walk will be led by Peter.

Proceed towards St. Stephen’s on back roads and paths, then the University, then the Crab and Winkle route – towards Clowes Wood.  We take the footpath down to A290, arriving nearby Red Lion House then walk along the Whitstable Road to Pean Hill, where we turn into Ellenden Wood, making our way to Victory Wood, eventually ending up in Courtenay Road.  The route then goes through North Bishopden Wood, then Church Wood and, via footpaths, back to Canterbury Bus Station where the walk finishes.

Approx. 12 miles.
