Wednesday Walk – 10 January, 2024

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am.

Weather forecast sunny and a moderate breeze with  temperatures not higher than 3 degrees. The walk will take us in the direction of Rough Common, Blean Church, Tyler Hill returning to Canterbury via the University. Approximately a two hour walk with coffee taken at a city centre coffee house.

SSS 319 – Tuesday 9 January, 2024 – Reverse The Hospital Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am outside the hospital – junction of South Canterbury Road with Ethelbert Road

The Langton Path to the end of the school playing fields, rugby club, Nackington then down to the bottom of the fields, by the pylons, then right and left through the firebreak in the woods, up the hill and onto to the Renville path. At Renville take the bridge across the motorway and then carefully walk across the NDR/A2 approach road and onto the lane which connects to the orchards, thence onto Pilgrims’ Way/St Augustine’s Road where the walk concludes. 6 miles

Thursday 4 January 2024 – Nailbourne from the source

Meet 8.20am at Canterbury Bus Station for the 8.25am no 17 to Lyminge. The bus can also be picked up on bus stops along the Old Dover Road.

The Nailbourne is flowing again, so this route will follow its course as closely as possible from the source in Lyminge back home to Canterbury. Much of the walk will follow the Elham Valley Way and we will go through Elham, Wingmore, Barham, Kingston, Bishopsbourne and Bridge. The walk can be shortened by catching a bus back from any of these villages.

It is about 14 miles so bring a packed lunch.

Wednesday Walk – 3 January, 2024

Happy New Year to all  Striders and midweek walkers.

As usual we’ll be meeting at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am.
 
The walk and where we have coffee will be decided on the day.
There is rain forecast later in the morning on Wednesday but our early start should avoid us getting a soaking.
The attached pic was taken on Barton Down ( the rubbish tip walk) last spring.

SSS318 – Tuesday, 2 January, 2024 – Reverse The Get Thee to a Nunnery Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am outside the hospital – junction of South Canterbury Road with Ethelbert Road

Walk to Rugby Club then, via Nackington to Bridge Road and into Whitehill Wood.  Onward to Lower Hardes Church then take the footpath to Bridge Road junction at Stone Street; cross onto footpath, which leads to Iffin Lane, and then the connecting footpath to New House Lane, then Hollow Lane crossing onto footpath through orchards and later connecting to Lime Kiln Road and Nunnery Road where the walk ends.

Thursday, 29 December, 2023 – The Pet Circle

It’s that time in the year when the Silver Striders do the Pet Circle walk, we’ve done it in December for the previous three years, this will be the fourth year.  Please bring something for elevenses/lunch.

Meet at junction of Nunnery Road with Nunnery Fields at 8:30am

We make our way to New House Lane by the usual route, eventually crossing Chartham Downs Road to Kenfield Road into Petham CP and Capel Wood. We work our way towards Stone Street, crossing Waltham Road and Duckpit Road, then across to Hogg Lane, Bow Hill (using more yellow roads today to avoid the mud), Catt’s Wood Road and, at Well Wood, taking the footpath towards the yellow road, which is Tapleys Hill, arriving at Pett Bottom. The usual route back from here, via Whitehill Wood, Nackington, the Rugby Club, the Langton and back to Stuppington Lane. Approx: 13 miles.

Last week’s very enjoyable Coast and Herne Bay Walk:

Thursday 21 December 2023 – Coast and Herne Bay

Meet at 8.30am, launderette opposite St Mary Bredin Church.

This route is about 13 miles and is designed to be largely mud free, following the cycle route to Whitstable and the coast to Herne Bay. Packed lunch or Wallflower Cafe, and bus back home.

A shorter walk is possible by taking the bus back from Whitstable or Tankerton.
