Wednesday Walk – 1 October, 2025

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for this weeks two hour walk followed by coffee and chat.

This week it’s a river side walk towards Chartham crossing the railway at Horton and returning via Howfield Farm and Tonford Manor. Eventually we’ll cross under the A2 to reach the lane that returns us to Toddlers Cove and a cafe beyond.

The weather forecast is for sunny intervals and light winds.

The attached photo was taken on a recent walk on the stretch of the Great Stour near ASDA. 

SSS409 – Tuesday, 30 September, 2025 – Reverse The Les Walk (The Hole in the Polo)

Meet at 8:00am outside number 67 St. Augustine’s Road (Les’s House)

NDW through Barton Industrial Estate towards Hode Farm but turning left towards Haystack Wood and Bekesbourne Road then turning left for paths by Palmstead Wood leading to the A257 by Fishpoolhill Wood. Footpath through Polo Farm then directly across Stodmarsh Road where we follow the path by the Golf Course until we come to the footpath by Scotland Hills.  Footpaths to and through Old Park Farm then taking the footpath by the side of the Barracks and Querns Estate, crossing the A257 for the path down Babbs Hill, later the St. Augustine’s Triangle, where the walk finishes. 6 miles.

Thursday 25 September, 2025 Canterbury to Wye (via Chilham & Bilting)

**Packed Lunch**

Meet at the corner of Nunnery Road with Nunnery Fields @ 8:30am

Proceed: Zealand Road, Lime Kiln Road, Footpath, Hollow Lane, New House Lane, Footpath to Strangers Lane then take the upper footpath to Chartham and then follow the same path, passing the Lakes, to Bagham. Walk towards Chilham but then follow Mountain Street into King’s Wood. When our footpath lines up above Bilting (below), we take the footpath down to the A28, cross the main road and then follow the footpath towards Wye (crossing the railway line). We can eat our lunch en route but perhaps take a coffee/tea at the cafe in Wye, alternatively we could take the train straight back to Canterbury West.  If appropriate we could consider the alternative of a bus from Bilting.

Distance 13 miles to Wye, less to Bilting.

Trains leave from Wye to Canterbury West at .03 minutes past the hour. Fare with railcard £4.95.  The buses from Bilting to Canterbury leave at .42 minutes pass the hour and take 31 minutes to the Bus Station.

Wednesday Walk – 24 September, 2025

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for this weeks walk.

A chance of drizzle and a moderate breeze early on the walk but clearing up before midday.

The direction of the walk will be decided on the day.

SSS408 – Tuesday, 23 September, 2025 – Reverse The Steve’s Walk

Meet at the top of Norman Road 8:00

Norman Road into Oxford Road, footpaths to Wincheap School then onward to A28/A2 Juction and Retail Park, taking pedestrian crossings until the outskirts of Thannington, turn left after A2 exit junction onto footpath leading to Cockering Road.  We proceed along Cockering Road until we get to the footpath, on the left hand side, which leads to St. Augustine’s, Chartham where we turn left across the recreation ground then into the woods coming out by the footpath that parallels New House Lane.  We turn left and return towards Canterbury, taking Hollow Lane down to the Wincheap Orchards and then across to Lime Kiln Road/Zealand Road/Nunnery Road, where the walk ends.

Thursday, 18 September, 2025 – Canterbury South Circular

Meet at the top of Nunnery Road at 8:30am

PACKED LUNCH

Proceed to New House Lane then into Larkey Valley Wood to Chartham Downs Road. Then we take the yellow road by Perry Hill Shaw and the footpath that eventually leads to Sappington Court then footpath to Kenfield Road. We now cross over the yellow road for the footpath to Swarling Manor Farm later crossing Stone Street and taking the footpath by Harmansole Farm to Lower Hardes, then past the Church and through Whitehill Wood to Pett Bottom Road, then footpath to Bridge.  The final part of the walk takes us under the A2 and up to the junction, carefully crossing Bifrons Hill and then by footpaths past Barton Industrial Estate to the Railway Bridge at the junction of Pilgrims’ Way with Pilgrims’ Road, where the walk finishes.

12 miles.

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for a two hour walk followed by beverages at a city centre cafe.

The direction of the walk will be decided on the day.

Weather forecast is for light rain and a fresh breeze.

SSS407 – Tuesday 16 September, 2025 – Reverse The Valley Lark Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am at the top of Nunnery Road (at the Junction with Nunnery Fields)

Nunnery Road, Zealand Road, Lime Kiln Road and across the fields coming out at Hollow Lane, then onto New House Lane taking the footpath to Cockering Road.  We take the footpath though Larkey Valley Wood leaving for footpaths crossing New House Lane and Iffin Lane, then footpath through to Merton Farm, cross A2 bridge – Rugby Club, Langton Path, K & C Hospital where the walk ends. 6 miles.

Thursday 11 September 2025 – Temple Ewell via Broome Park

Meet at 8.30am, K&C, South Canterbury Rd entrance. The walk is 15 miles with regular buses from Temple Ewell.

Bring a packed lunch or snack. We will have an elevenses break at Broome Park, which has a cafe. If you want a shorter walk (about 10 miles) there are regular buses from Broome Park.

Past the rugby ground to Nackington, Whitehill Woods, Middle Pett Farm, Hint Cottage. Elham Valley way to Bishopsbourne, Kingston, Heart’s Delight, Barham. Over the Broome Park golf course to the main entrance. Past Lyddon Circuit, Birches Farm, Stanton Farm to Ewell Minnis. Through the Minnis to Temple Ewell.

There are regular buses back from Temple Ewell.

Wednesday Walk – 10 September, 2025

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for the weekly two hour walk followed by coffee at a city centre cafe.

The walk last week was called off because of inclement weather. For the walk this week the forecast is for sunny intervals and a moderate breeze. There is a low possibility of rain.

This week’s walk will take us to the university, Giles Lane, Alford Grange, Barton Down, Broadoak Rd and the river path as far as the Millers Arms where no doubt coffee will be taken.
