Wednesday Walk – 17 September, 2025

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for a two hour walk followed by beverages at a city centre cafe.

The direction of the walk will be decided on the day.

Weather forecast is for light rain and a fresh breeze.

SSS407 – Tuesday 16 September, 2025 – Reverse The Valley Lark Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am at the top of Nunnery Road (at the Junction with Nunnery Fields)

Nunnery Road, Zealand Road, Lime Kiln Road and across the fields coming out at Hollow Lane, then onto New House Lane taking the footpath to Cockering Road.  We take the footpath though Larkey Valley Wood leaving for footpaths crossing New House Lane and Iffin Lane, then footpath through to Merton Farm, cross A2 bridge – Rugby Club, Langton Path, K & C Hospital where the walk ends. 6 miles.

Thursday 11 September 2025 – Temple Ewell via Broome Park

This walk created by Nick.

Meet at 8.30am, K&C, South Canterbury Rd entrance. The walk is 15 miles with regular buses from Temple Ewell.

Bring a packed lunch or snack. We will have an elevenses break at Broome Park, which has a cafe. If you want a shorter walk (about 10 miles) there are regular buses from Broome Park.

Past the rugby ground to Nackington, Whitehill Woods, Middle Pett Farm, Hint Cottage. Elham Valley way to Bishopsbourne, Kingston, Heart’s Delight, Barham. Over the Broome Park golf course to the main entrance. Past Lyddon Circuit, Birches Farm, Stanton Farm to Ewell Minnis. Through the Minnis to Temple Ewell.

There are regular buses back from Temple Ewell.

Wednesday Walk – 10 September, 2025

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for the weekly two hour walk followed by coffee at a city centre cafe.

The walk last week was called off because of inclement weather. For the walk this week the forecast is for sunny intervals and a moderate breeze. There is a low possibility of rain.

This week’s walk will take us to the university, Giles Lane, Alford Grange, Barton Down, Broadoak Rd and the river path as far as the Millers Arms where no doubt coffee will be taken.

The attached pic was snapped the Wednesday before last(27/08/2025) in a field planted with rapeseed near Great Hall Wood.

SSS 406 – Tuesday 9 September, 2025 – Reverse The Woolton Farm Walk

Meet outside 25 St. Augustine’s Road at 8:00 am

Spring Lane, the footpath past Little Barton House by the railway line then along Bekesbourne Lane taking the second footpath on the left through Woolton Farm, past Farthings Wood and shortly afterwards taking a left into Court Wood towards Littlebourne Road, at the end of this footpath we take the footpath to the left, towards Firdown Wood but turn right before Palmstead Wood proceeding towards the Hoath Farm (footpath), crossing  Bekesbourne Lane then through the former orchards back to Spring Lane (where the walk concludes) via Little Barton House. 6 miles

Thursday 4 September 2025 – Whitstable NW passage

Meet at 8.30am Launderette opposite St Mary Bredin Church

The walk is about 11m with a bus back from Whitstable. Option of a visit to Wetherspoons, cafe or packed lunch.  Usual stops en route.

Landsdown Rd to Canterbury East, Toddlers Cove, river walk to Tonford Manor. Tonford Lane to NDW, through Bigbury wood and right down to Poldhurst Farm. Over the A2 bridge into Willows and Church Wood, to Denstroude Farm and Lane through Ellenden Wood and Fox’s Cross. Cross Thant Way at Yorkletts bridge. Walk along Seasalter Lane and footpath through Seasalter to the coast, approaching Whitstable by the beach huts and the Neptune.

Wednesday Walk – 3 September, 2025

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am.

The walk will climb up to the university campus partly on the route of the dismantled railway. We will follow along Giles Lane and climb the style next to where the New Wetland is being created. Joining Barton Down the walk will continue to where the railway and Broadoak Road is crossed. Crossing the river and picking up the path next to the Sea Cadets hut will eventually take us to the Millers Arms where we’ll round the morning off with coffee.

Drizzle and a moderate wind is the forecast but hopefully it will not detract from a pleasant walk.

SSS 405 – Tuesday 2 September, 2025 – Reverse Travelling Riverside Blues Walk

Meet outside St. Martin’s Church at 8:00am 

We take the SVW path, later joining the cycle path to Fordwich but later cutting through to Dickens Avenue, then South Street, crossing the Sturry Road and heading for ASDA and then the path by the Stour, which we follow to the Miller’s Arms passing Sainsbury’s en route.  At this point we make our way to the footpath which parallels North Lane by the side of the other Stour and continue onto Westgate Gardens, then the SVW to the Riverside Retail Park where we weave our way to Wincheap School, crossing the A28 in the process.  The walk finishes at the junction of Norman Road with Nunnery Road and Oxford Road.

Thursday 28 August, 2025 – The Bottoms and Bossingham

This walk was created by Nick.

Meet 8.30am, K&C Hospital, South Canterbury Road entrance

The route is about 14 miles, returning early afternoon. Packed lunch recommended.

Past the rugby field, Nackington Road, Nackington, Whitehill Woods, Little Eaton Farm. Path along Pett Bottom valley to Westwood Farm, then take path through Lynsore Bottom, to Bossingham. Then footpath to Bossingham Church, Stone Street, Dane Chantry, Petham. Through Kenfield Hall parkland to the Chartham Downs road. Path through Rabbit Wood to New House Farm, back to Canterbury.

Wednesday Walk – 27 August, 2025

Meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am for a two hour walk followed by coffee at a city centre cafe.

 
The walk will follow the Sarre Penn at the rear of the university as far as Alcroft Grange and then returning to the city centre via Hales Place.
Sunny intervals and a light breeze is forecast.
