SSS282 – Tuesday 18 April, 2023 – Around The Woods Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am outside the hospital – junction of South Canterbury Road with Ethelbert Road

Walk to Rugby Club then, via Nackington to Bridge Road and into Whitehill Wood: turn left at the cross paths heading towards Bridge.  We continue straight ahead at the next cross paths then, at the path T junction, we turn right along the bridal path, keeping to the side of the woods until we come onto Pett Bottom Road at Little Eaton Farm.  Walking towards the Duck we turn right (Tapleys Hill) and, later, right again (School Lane), proceeding uphill we turn into the woods again at the footpath sign but, as we approach the path, leading to Pett Bottom Road, we turn left towards the centre of the wood and continue straight on; later crossing Bridge Road and back through Nackington, the Rugby Club, turning left at the Langton Path towards Stuppington Lane.  The walk concludes at the junction with South Canterbury Road.

Thursday 13 April 2023 – Selstead via Covert Wood

Meet 8.30am, K&C Hospital, South Canterbury Road entrance.

The walk is 12 miles, with regular buses back from Selstead. We should be back in Canterbury around 1.30pm so bring a packed lunch or snack.

Through the hospital to the rugby field, cross Nackington Road, walk to Whitehill woods. Path down to Little Eaton Farm, cross Pett Bottom road and take the footpath that runs along the valley behind the Duck Inn to Westwood Farm. Road and paths through Covert wood to Bladbean Farm, Wingmore, and onto the EVW, Tappington Hall, Rakehole Farm and Selstead.

The bus 16 runs every 20 minutes back to Cantebury.

Wednesday Walk 12 April, 2023

The WWs will meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am.

The weather forecast is for gusty winds and light rain showers. Check your in-box

at 7:00am if the weather outside your window doesn’t look great for a walk.

Hopefully there will not be a need to cancel.

For this week’s  ramble we’ll probably follow the river path in the Chartham direction and circle

back via Howfield Farm.

SSS281 – Tuesday 11 April, 2023 – Nick’s Walk

Meet by St Mary Bredin Church at 8:00am

Toddler’s cove via Lansdown Road

SVW to near Tonford Manor; at the bridge to Thanington turn right (not left) onto the footpath, walk past Tonford Manor, under the A2 then:

Turn left on footpath into Lower Harbledown, through St Nicholas’s Hospital into Harbledown and left at the Church then over the road bridge and through the meadow to the top – towards Blean water tower and right on the footpath to St Dunstan’s back over the railway bridge and then home via Toddler’s Cove and under the ring road bridge by the river or through Westgate Gardens and Greyfriars.  6 miles.

Thursday, 6 April, 2023 – Peter’s South Alkham Odyssey

Meet at Canterbury Bus Station (Bay D1) to catch the 8:30am, Number 16 Bus to Denton/Folkestone.  Cost £2. Duration 17 mins (to Denton).

The route, shown above is about 10 miles however, quite a lot of up and down – see the contours.  There will be breaks for refreshment so please bring snack/packed lunch/something to drink.  At the conclusion of the walk there will be the opportunity to extend it (Peter will advise of possibilities on the day) otherwise bus (Number 15) back from Penchester Road Bus Station, Dover:

Wednesday Walk 5 April, 2023

We’ll meet at the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am.

The Wednesday Walk has reached it’s second anniversary and we’re still finding paths previously not trodden by the midweekers.

The walk this week will probably be in the direction of Barton Down

SSS280 – Tuesday 4 April, 2023 – Reverse The Steve’s Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am outside the Hospital (junction of Ethelbert and South Canterbury Roads)

The Langton Path to the end of the school playing fields, rugby club, over the A2 bridge and proceed to Nackington, Whitehill Wood, Lower Hardes.  Work back from Lower Hardes to New House Lane and then back to South Canterbury Road via A2 bridge crossing in Stuppington Lane.

Subject to modification by Steve on the day.

Thursday, 30 March, 2023 – The Waitrose Circle

Meet at 8:30 opposite St. Mary Bredin Church (by the Launderette).

There will be a few stops so please bring something to eat and drink (including lunch).

A 15 mile route that encompasses some different paths to those known by the Striders whilst remaining circular and ending up at a popular local landmark.    Anyone who desires a shorter walk could leave the circle as it loops back to Canterbury by taking a more direct route to the centre.  The walk heads into Denstead Woods from Chartham Hatch and takes permissive paths into Bower Wood, then Court Wood and north to Brotherhood Wood. We make our way to Podhurst Farm and then cross into Church Wood, gradually working across to Tyler Hill, Hackington, through town, ending up outside Waitrose.

Wednesday Walk 29 March, 2023

The walk this week will be in the Blean area. We’ll meet at 8:30am at the main entrance

to the Westgate Gardens.
The forecast for Wednesday is for light cloud with a low chance of rain.
There’s  not a pic from last week as the walk was called off. Attached is an earlier photo taken
near Broad Oak.  This area will be dramatically changed if the proposals for the reservoir go ahead.

SSS279 – Tuesday 28 March, 2023 – Reverse The Valley Lark Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am at the top of Nunnery Road (at the Junction with Nunnery Fields)

Nunnery Road, Zealand Road, Lime Kiln Road and across the fields coming out at Hollow Lane, then onto New House Lane taking the footpath to Cockering Road.  We take the footpath though Larkey Valley Wood leaving for footpaths crossing New House Lane and Iffin Lane, then footpath through to Merton Farm, cross A2 bridge – Rugby Club, Langton Path, K & C Hospital where the walk ends. 6 miles.
