Wednesday Walk 3 May, 2023

The Wednesday Walkers and those who would like to join a midweek stroll will meet at 8:30am at the  main entrance to the Westgate Gardens.

The direction of the walk will no doubt be decided on the day as will the venue for the post stroll coffee.

A bright sunny morning is forecast with a moderate breeze, perfect walking weather.

SSS284 – Tuesday 2 May, 2023 – The Get Thee to a Nunnery Walk

Meet corner of Nunnery Fields/Nunnery Road @ 8am

Nunnery Road/Zealand Road/Lime Kiln Road/Fields to Hollow Lane/Footpath to New House Lane/Connecting footpath to Iffin Lane/Footpath to Bridge Road/Footpath to Lower Hardes Church then along the lane for the path through Whitehill Wood back via Bridge Road and Nackington, via Rugby Club, to the Hospital. (6 miles)

Thursday, 27 April, 2023 – Canterbury Northern Circle

Lunch stop – packed lunch and something to drink advised

Meet outside The Launderette (opposite St. Mary Bredin Church) at 8:30 am

Walk to Toddler’s Cove then up to Orchard Street, along St. Dunstan’s Terrace, crossing London Road, later taking the footpath beside the Cemetery and parallel to Whitstable Road – towards Rough Common but take the turning by Kent College and then cross the Whitstable Road.
We then take the footpath to Walnut Tree Farm and then into Clowes Wood and through to Radfall, moving along to bypass Chestfield Golf Club and crossing Thornton Wood Road at Sheepfold as we move into West Blean Nature Reserve, making for The Radfall path, thence Hackington and Alcoft Grange. With Canterbury Cathedral as our notional ending place we weave our way through Hales Place, St. Stephen’s and then pavement footpath to the Cathedral.

Approx. 12 miles.

Wednesday Walk 26 April, 2023

Please make your way to the main entrance to the Wesgate Gardens by 8:30am to join this week’s walk.

 
The bluebells are beginning to show so our walk will take us in the direction of Barton Down
and Wood where they can be seen at their best.
Rain is possible so please check your inbox at 7:00am if what is happening outside may cause
the walk to be called off.

SSS283 – Tuesday 25 April, 2023 – The Don’s Walk

Meet @ 8 am outside 25 St Augustine’s Road

St Martins Church, Stour Valley Way to Fordwich (forking right – off bike route) scary bit after Fordwich for 200 yds then turn right up hill to Stodmarsh Road via CCCU playing field. Across Stodmarsh Rd, footpath straight on then veer right into field and down to Lampen Stream. Turn right along bottom of field following stream for 400 yards, then turn left across stream and up the hill to old waste dump, right onto Swanton Lane, then straight across and down past Firdown Wood. Before the bare field at near Palmstead wood turn right and proceed towards the Hoath Farm (the last bit is along Bekesborne Road, thus exercise care), then right and left and thus to Hoath Farm, home via Little Barton House. 6 miles.

Wednesday Walk 19 April, 2023

As usual we’ll meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens for 8:30am

A decision on what route we take will be made on the day. The walk should not take

longer than two hours.

Although there is not a forecast for bright sunshine it should remain dry and be a good

day for a walk.

SSS282 – Tuesday 18 April, 2023 – Around The Woods Walk

Meet @ 8:00 am outside the hospital – junction of South Canterbury Road with Ethelbert Road

Walk to Rugby Club then, via Nackington to Bridge Road and into Whitehill Wood: turn left at the cross paths heading towards Bridge.  We continue straight ahead at the next cross paths then, at the path T junction, we turn right along the bridal path, keeping to the side of the woods until we come onto Pett Bottom Road at Little Eaton Farm.  Walking towards the Duck we turn right (Tapleys Hill) and, later, right again (School Lane), proceeding uphill we turn into the woods again at the footpath sign but, as we approach the path, leading to Pett Bottom Road, we turn left towards the centre of the wood and continue straight on; later crossing Bridge Road and back through Nackington, the Rugby Club, turning left at the Langton Path towards Stuppington Lane.  The walk concludes at the junction with South Canterbury Road.

The WWs will meet at the main entrance to the Westgate Gardens at 8:30am.

The weather forecast is for gusty winds and light rain showers. Check your in-box

at 7:00am if the weather outside your window doesn’t look great for a walk.

Hopefully there will not be a need to cancel.

For this week’s  ramble we’ll probably follow the river path in the Chartham direction and circle

back via Howfield Farm.

SSS281 – Tuesday 11 April, 2023 – Nick’s Walk

Meet by St Mary Bredin Church at 8:00am

Toddler’s cove via Lansdown Road

SVW to near Tonford Manor; at the bridge to Thanington turn right (not left) onto the footpath, walk past Tonford Manor, under the A2 then:

Turn left on footpath into Lower Harbledown, through St Nicholas’s Hospital into Harbledown and left at the Church then over the road bridge and through the meadow to the top – towards Blean water tower and right on the footpath to St Dunstan’s back over the railway bridge and then home via Toddler’s Cove and under the ring road bridge by the river or through Westgate Gardens and Greyfriars.  6 miles.

Thursday, 6 April, 2023 – Peter’s South Alkham Odyssey

Meet at Canterbury Bus Station (Bay D1) to catch the 8:30am, Number 16 Bus to Denton/Folkestone.  Cost £2. Duration 17 mins (to Denton).

The route, shown above is about 10 miles however, quite a lot of up and down – see the contours.  There will be breaks for refreshment so please bring snack/packed lunch/something to drink.  At the conclusion of the walk there will be the opportunity to extend it (Peter will advise of possibilities on the day) otherwise bus (Number 15) back from Penchester Road Bus Station, Dover:
